Membership

The idea of the Corps of Discovery is to become a Servant Leader Society.  That is, a society of Venturing Leaders, both youth and adult, who take seriously the servant leader concept as taught in Kodiak.  Servant leadership is a philosophy, teaching that the leader works with and through a team to accomplish service and growth to one's home Venturing and/or Scouting community.

Membership in the Corps of Discovery is focused on encouraging young adults to step outside of their comfort zones and start their volunteerism while they are still in high school.  Any Venturer who shows the desire, tendency, or even the potential to contribute should be inducted into the Corps of Discovery.

The idea here is to identify young adults who are or can become activists and to help them take the first step.  That is why we call it a service society rather than an honor society.  Like the Venturing Officers Association, anyone who is interested in helping out should be welcome to join up and start helping.

Induction into the Corps of Discovery should be a "pay forward" endeavor.  In other words, only current members can nominate inductees, and it is the responsibility of all current youth members to mentor their candidates until they can be inducted.  This reflects the final commission of Kodiak-X, mentoring.

In addition for membership, any VOA Advisor, ADC for Venturing, Crew Advisor, Kodiak Course Director, or Venturing Roundtable Commissioner should be able to select members to the Corps of Discovery.  Membership in the Corps should be a compliment to the young person, but not a great big celebration.

It is not intended that the Corps become an Honor Society or a form of recognition as a variety of recognition is already in place in the Venturing program.  The Corps of Discovery is for people who want to take a leadership role in building Venturing and Scouting.
